What this assessment measures

Twelve statements, three in each of four areas: Cascade, Accountability, Visibility and Restraint. You rate how true each one is right now. The score is not a personality type and it does not change with your mood. It is a read on how the work moves.

Cascade

My managers delegate outcomes to their people the way I delegate to them.
I have actually taught my managers how to hand work over, not just expected them to.
I have watched one of my managers run a delegation conversation and coached them on it.

Accountability

Every significant project here has exactly one person accountable for the outcome.
I have not heard "I thought they were handling that" in a while.
People know the difference between being consulted and being the decision maker.

Visibility

I know what is really happening two levels down, not just what my managers report.
Problems reach me before they have been filtered into good news.
I talk to people below my direct reports often enough to notice when something is off.

Restraint

When something goes wrong in a manager's team, I coach the manager rather than fixing it myself.
My 1:1s with managers are about how they are leading, not about the work itself.
I resist stepping into work that belongs to someone two levels down.

How the score is read

Your answers produce a score out of 100 and place you at one of four levels. Each level comes with a plain reading of what it means and where it usually breaks.

Level 1, Still Managing. Scores 0 to 40.
Level 2, The Relay. Scores 41 to 60.
Level 3, The Cascade. Scores 61 to 80.
Level 4, Leading Leaders. Scores 81 to 100.

You also get a score for each of the four areas, so you can see which one is actually holding things back rather than guessing.

What to do with the result

The point is not the number. It is which of the four areas comes back lowest, because that is the one to work on first. Pick that one, change one thing this week, and take the assessment again in a month to see whether the change held.
