The Top Five Traits of Strong Female Leaders
CEO Mindset

As a leadership coach with over 20 years of business experience, I’ve had the privilege of working with countless female leaders to transform their leadership abilities. Through coaching, I’ve observed that strong female leaders possess certain key traits that set them apart. These traits—self-awareness, confidence, empathy, emotional intelligence, and resilience—are essential for women in leadership roles, not only to personally thrive but to make a lasting impact in the business world.

In this blog post, I’ll delve into these five traits and explain why these are essential in female leadership roles in today’s business environment.

1. Self-Awareness: The Foundation of Strong Leadership

If you want to be great at anything, the first step is always self-awareness: understanding who you are on a core level and being honest with yourself about your strengths, weaknesses, and blind spots. In the context of leadership, self-awareness is particularly important because leadership is about guiding others—and the only way to guide others effectively is if you first know how to guide yourself.

I’ve seen time and time again that strong female leaders are deeply in tune with their inner selves, and that is precisely what gives them the ability to navigate the complexities of leadership. A self-aware leader can (1) inspire trust in their teams, (2) communicate effectively, (3) make informed decisions, and (4) understand how their actions affect others, while a leader who lacks self-awareness cannot.

2. Confidence: Belief in Oneself and One’s Abilities

Leadership confidence is another defining trait of strong female leaders. Successful women in leadership roles know that they are competent and capable. Even more, their confidence doesn’t just come from knowledge or skill—it comes from their belief in themselves and their ability to lead.

I would go so far as to even pose that confidence is the very thing that empowers female leaders to make bold business decisions, even in the face of uncertainty. In my experience, empowered female leaders consistently demonstrate the ability to take calculated risks. They trust their judgment. They make difficult decisions without second-guessing themselves. They don’t back down in the face of others’ disapproval. Thus, confidence is a hallmark trait of any successful female leader.

3. Empathy: Understanding and Supporting Others

Empathy allows people to connect on a personal level, helping them to feel seen, heard, safe, and valued. It is traditionally seen as a feminine trait, and it is one quality that often sets women apart from men in leadership. In fact, many women executives I work with attribute their success to their ability to empathize with their teams and understand what drives and motivates them.

Strong female leaders genuinely care about their employees’ well-being and success, treating them with fairness and kindness. Empathy helps them to build rapport, resolve conflicts, foster loyalty, and create an inclusive workplace culture. Thus, though empathy may be seen as a soft skill or get overlooked…in the world of business, it is vital.

4. Emotional Intelligence: Navigating the Complexities of Leadership

Emotional intelligence (EI) is closely tied to self-awareness and is essential for any strong female leader. EI involves understanding and managing your own emotions, as well as recognizing and influencing the emotions of others.

Women with high EI are able to communicate with their teams in a way that resonates with everyone. Since each employee is different, EI helps leaders to be versatile. They know when to be firm. They know when to show compassion. They also know how to read people, or adjust their approach based on an individual’s personality and emotional state.

More than anything, strong female leaders utilize EI to create a cohesive and productive work environment. It enables them to listen more effectively, understand differing viewpoints, and make decisions that are aligned with the larger vision of the company.

5. Resilience: Persevering in the Face of Adversity

Without a doubt, one of the most important traits of any strong female leader is resilience. The world of business is still largely male-dominated, and women leaders often face additional challenges and scrutiny. They may not always be taken as seriously as their male counterparts, or their ideas may be overlooked. Thus, resilient women are the real winners because obstacles don’t stop them.

Resilience means pushing through setbacks, handling criticism with grace, and continuing to move forward even when things get tough. Women entrepreneurs and leaders who display resilience know that roadblocks and detours are simply part of the journey. Rather than seeing them as signs to stop, they view them as opportunities to innovate and break through barriers.

(What’s particularly interesting is that resilience often goes hand-in-hand with empathy, another trait on this list. The ability to persevere in the face of adversity gives strong female leaders a unique perspective. They understand what it’s like to face challenges, and that experience helps them relate to others and build trust.)
