Presented by Martha Spalding ·

In this lesson

Having all the leadership skills in the world means nothing without direction. This foundational chapter reveals why even the most competent leaders struggle when they lack a clear sense of purpose driving their decisions, and why this gap is more costly than most realize. You'll assess where your current time and energy actually go versus where they should go based on your stated priorities. This honest evaluation often reveals surprising disconnects between intention and action that impact both your effectiveness and fulfillment.

What you will discover

  • Why 70% of employees look to their work for life purpose, but fewer than 1 in 3 executives make purpose-driven decisions
  • The hidden costs of leading without purpose: reactive decision-making, team confusion, and leader burnout
  • How purpose acts as an internal compass for confident decision-making during uncertain times
  • The difference between managing tasks and leading toward meaningful outcomes

Exercise

Audit last week's calendar: where did your time and energy actually go, and where should they have gone based on your stated priorities? Write the three biggest gaps in the workbook.

Leaders who feel something is missing

Hey there, I'm Martha, one of the co-authors of Power Without Permission, and welcome to Vision to Impact, Leading with Purpose and Action. If you've been with me through the previous courses in this series, Tackling Self-Doubt, Battling Self-Awareness, Developing Emotional Intelligence, and Navigating Power and Politics, you're ready for what might be the most transformative part of your leadership journey yet. This course is different. We're not just talking about managing your inner world anymore. We're talking about channeling everything you've learned into meaningful action that creates real impact.

We're talking about leading with purpose that not only drives your own growth, but inspires others to follow. And just like our other courses, this comes with a workbook, so make sure you have it ready because we're going to dive deep into some powerful exercises that will help you clarify your direction and build momentum. So welcome to chapter one, why purpose matters now. Now here's something I want you to know right from the start.

Even the most successful leaders struggle with direction. They might have all the skills, the experience, the team, but without a clear sense of purpose driving their decisions, they end up feeling like they're just going through the motions. And maybe you recognize this feeling. You're hitting your targets, managing your team well, but something feels missing. You might be wondering, is this it? Am I just checking boxes? Or am I actually building something meaningful?

What this course will cover

The difference between leaders who thrive long term and those who burn out isn't just competence. It's clarity about why they're doing what they're doing and the courage to act on it consistently. Before we dive in, let me tell you exactly what we're going to explore together in this course. You'll understand what purpose is and how it acts as an internal compass, not just a nice to have, but a practical tool for making decisions with confidence. You'll learn how to craft a compelling personal and professional vision that actually guides your actions instead of just sitting in a drawer somewhere.

You'll develop a bias toward action over stagnating. We're going to tackle that tendency to get stuck in planning mode and help you build momentum through consistent strategic action. You'll explore practical strategies to make consistent impact, real tactics that work for busy leaders who are trying to create change while managing existing responsibilities. And you'll equip yourself to lead others with purpose, clarity, and action. Because ultimately, your job as a leader isn't just to be purposeful yourself. It's to create conditions where others can do meaningful work too. This isn't theory. This is practical leadership development that you can apply starting today.

The purpose gap and my own lesson

So let me start by sharing some research that might surprise you. 70% of employees say their sense of purpose is defined by their work. I want you to think about that for a moment. Seven out of 10 people are looking to their jobs for meaning and direction in their lives. But here's the problem. Fewer than one in three executives say their organization's purpose drives day-to-day decisions. So we have this massive disconnect. People want purpose, but leaders aren't consistently operating from it. So what does that result in? It brings disengagement, misalignment, and stalled impact. Teams that don't understand why they're doing what they're doing. Organizations that drift without clear direction.

And for leaders, the stakes are even higher. Without purpose, you risk burnout, reactive decision-making, and team confusion. You end up managing by crisis instead of leading with intention. But when you have purpose, you gain clarity about what matters most. You develop resilience because you're anchored to something bigger than daily frustrations. And most importantly, you inspire others with confidence because they can see you're not just making it up as you go along. You're moving toward something meaningful.

And I learned this the hard way early in my career. I was promoted to lead a team and I thought success meant just doing everything better than my predecessor. I worked long hours, set higher standards, and tried to optimize every single process. And my team performed well, but something was missing. And it wasn't until a team member asked me, what are we actually trying to achieve here, like beyond this quarter's numbers, that I realized I really had no good answer. I was managing tasks, but not leading toward a vision. And that conversation changed everything for me.

So before we go deeper, I want you to pause and ask yourself this question. If someone observed you for a week, your calendar, your decisions, your energy, what would they say your purpose is based solely on your actions? And again, as with our other courses, we have a course workbook. So go ahead and pop into your course workbook. You can see it here. And let's look at the exercise one. Pause the video here and write down what you think they'd observe. Don't overthink it. Just be honest about where your time and energy actually go versus where you think they should go.

Because here's what I want you to take away from this first chapter. Purpose is a necessity. Without it, you're essentially flying blind, making decisions based on whatever feels urgent rather than what actually matters. The statistics we looked at represent real people in real organizations who are either thriving because they understand their why or struggling because they don't have that clarity. The good news here is that purpose isn't something you either have or don't have.

It's something you can discover and strengthen. And once you do, it changes everything. How you make decisions, how you spend your energy, and how you inspire the people around you. In our next chapter, we're going to dig into the practical work of understanding your own purpose. We'll explore where it comes from, how to identify it if it's not clear yet, and how to use it as a foundation for everything else we'll build together. See you there.
