1. The Self-Awareness Advantage
You cannot grow what you cannot see. This lesson is about seeing.
In this lesson
Self-awareness isn't about feeling good about yourself; it's about seeing yourself clearly so you can lead more effectively. Most leaders think they're more self-aware than they actually are, which limits their growth and impact.
This is the foundation with real stories from leaders, research-backed insights, and your first reflection exercise to understand what truly motivates your daily actions.
What you will discover
- Why self-awareness is your secret weapon as a leader (it's not just a "soft skill")
- The simple truth that most leaders learn too late: You can't grow what you can't see
- Real research showing why self-aware leaders are 3x more effective
- The shocking gap between how self-aware we think we are vs. reality
- A fundamental question that will reveal what's really driving your leadership
Exercise
Answer the one question this lesson ends with, in writing: what is really driving my daily actions as a leader? Keep the answer; you will test it against your profile in lesson three.

Why self-awareness is the leadership advantage
Hi again and welcome back. I'm Martha, one of the co-authors of Power Without Permission, and if you're here, you've likely completed the confidence and self-doubt course, which means you're already ahead of most leaders. You've started the journey of seeing your worth, and now we're going to go through something that all the most successful leaders have: self-awareness. So here's our next course, Unlock Your Inner Compass, starting with Chapter One, The Self-Awareness Advantage. Let's start with a simple truth that took me way too long to learn. You can't grow what you can't see. Here's an example.
A senior director I know is a brilliant strategist with an incredible work ethic, but her team was struggling. Turnover was high, people seemed stressed, and she couldn't figure out why. She kept focusing on processes, systems, new initiatives. It wasn't until she did some 360 feedback that she realized the issue wasn't her strategy, it was how she was showing up. Her intensity and perfectionism, which served her well as an individual contributor, was creating anxiety in her team. Once she could see this pattern, everything changed. Leaders with strong self-awareness make better decisions, build stronger teams, and navigate complexity with clarity.
It's one of the top predictors of executive success, promotability, and trust. But here's the kicker, and it might sting just a little bit. Most leaders overestimate how self-aware they truly are. So here's what you're going to get from this course. You'll understand the role of self-awareness in personal growth and leadership, learn the difference between internal versus external self-awareness, and identify your self-awareness profile. You'll explore inner child work and limiting beliefs, gain practical tools to deepen self-awareness, and learn how to apply these concepts to lead teams and foster a psychologically safe culture.
What self-awareness actually means
So let's go ahead and get started. What are we actually talking about when we say self-awareness? It's having a conscious understanding of who you are, where you stand, and how you arrived at this point in your life. It's having genuine curiosity about your thoughts, emotions, behaviors, and beliefs. Without self-awareness, life is often directionless and full of repetition. Decisions are made reactively. The goal is to develop a strong, supportive relationship with yourself.
So for this first exercise, here's a question I want you to sit with for a moment, and I want your honest answer. Why do you do what you do every day? Don't overthink it. Just notice what comes up. Is it about impact, security, recognition, growth? There's no right answer, but your answer will tell you a lot about what's driving you. So go ahead and pause the video here and go over into your worksheet for this course. Here you can see is Exercise One, so take some time and write down your answer.
How it shapes your career
The truth is that self-awareness underpins nearly every aspect of your life. It impacts your confidence and sense of fulfillment, your decision making, your emotional regulation and resilience, your relationship with yourself and others, and your ability to empathize and connect. And remember, you can only change what you can see, so self-awareness will help you in any areas where you aren't satisfied. Here's the bottom line for your career: greater self-awareness equals higher trust, higher promotability, and higher impact. I had a co-worker who was technically brilliant but kept getting passed over for promotions, and he simply couldn't understand why.
He got feedback that his communication style came across as dismissive, especially in meetings. He thought he was being efficient, but others experienced it as arrogance. Once he could see this, he made small adjustments that made a huge difference, and within six months, he got a promotion. So in our next chapter, we're going to explore why self-awareness is so hard to achieve and introduce you to two types of self-awareness that will change how you think about personal development. See you there!
