Free to Choose

Reading. Nothing holds you tight. Staying or going is a real choice.

0Freedom

This page describes the Free to Choose result. Take the golden handcuffs test: is it the money, or the fear to see your own score and dimension bars here; they are drawn from the link the tool gives you and nothing is stored on this page.

This test sorts what is keeping you where you are. It is not financial advice; the runway arithmetic in the worksheet uses your numbers and should be checked with someone qualified. It does not know your health, your family or your contract, and it does not tell you to leave.

Your freedom score is 67 or over. The pay is not what keeps you, the work is still for something you care about, fear of the clock or the market is not deciding for you, and you have some room to move. This test calls that Free to Choose. It describes where you stand today, not who you are.

It is also a position that is easy to waste. When nothing holds you tight, the risk is not being trapped. It is drift. A job that is good enough can fill a year without anyone deciding anything, you included, and good enough is where ambition goes quiet.

So use the freedom on purpose. Freedom to choose is only worth something if you make a choice, and staying can be a choice as much as leaving. The difference is whether you stay for a reason you can name.

Here is the question this whole test is built around. What would you lead if money were not the reason? Not which job you would take. What you would lead: a team, a function, a company, a piece of work that would not happen without you. If the answer is here, say it to the person who can give it to you. If it is somewhere else, you have the room to go and find it.

What to do this week. Write one paragraph that starts with: in two years I want to be leading. Then hold it against your current job. If the job gets you there, tell your manager the paragraph. If it does not, the three columns in the next section apply, and your score says you have the room to use them.

If you want to know what you would lead with, the free leadership style quiz is the place to start.

What to do with this result

Both views are here. If you answered the routing question, yours comes first.

If you do not manage people

Your next one on one. Say the paragraph out loud: in two years I want to be leading this, and here is why this job could get me there. Ask what would need to be true for that to happen. A manager who engages has given you a reason to stay. A manager who cannot has given you information.

The three columns. Leave, if the paragraph points somewhere this job cannot go and you have the runway to look. Stay and act, if the job can get you there and one conversation would start it. Stay and wait, if a change you can name, with a date, is already on its way. Write down your column and a date to check it.

The free leadership style quiz shows what you lead with.

If you manage people

Your freedom is useful to your team. A manager who is not held by the money or by fear can tell the truth upward and take a fair risk, and people notice. The question for you runs the other way: which of your people are in handcuffs, and would they tell you? Your team could answer these twelve statements very differently from you.

Ask each of them, in your next one on ones, what would make this job worth staying in for another two years. The 1:1 meeting builder gives that conversation a structure, and the 360 lite shows how you look from their side.

If you are leaving to start or run something

The runway rule, as arithmetic. Before you resign, divide the savings you are prepared to spend by your monthly costs, including the new costs the venture adds. That is your runway in months. Then write down how many months you expect before the new thing pays you. If the first number is smaller than the second, you know what has to change before the letter goes in. This is arithmetic with your own numbers, not financial advice; check it with someone qualified.

You scored Free to Choose, which is a strong position to start something from: you are going towards something, not away from a lock. If you want peers for the move, the CEO Mastermind is a peer group for CEOs, and the executive coaching cost index sets out what one to one coaching costs, with sources.
