The Pair

Reading. You and this manager, together. The fix is between you.

0Mirror

This page describes the The Pair result. Take the am i the problem at work: the common denominator test to see your own score and dimension bars here; they are drawn from the link the tool gives you and nothing is stored on this page.

This test looks for patterns in how you experience work. It is not a clinical instrument and it does not diagnose anything. If you are being harassed, bullied or discriminated against, this test does not apply to you and the answer is not you; talk to HR, an employment lawyer or a therapist. If work is affecting your health, see a doctor.

Your Friction score is 50 or higher, and your Pattern score is not. The friction does not follow you from job to job. It lives between you and this manager: disagreements run long, you say you still disagree after the decision is made, and getting the last word matters to you. This test calls that reading The Pair. It is not you alone, and it is not them alone. It is the pattern the two of you make.

That is the most fixable reading of the four, because a pattern between two people changes when one of them changes their half. You cannot change their half. You can change yours this week, and that changes what the pattern has to feed on.

Alison Green put it to a reader in exactly this spot: "It sounds like your boss keeps trying to prove their point because you keep making a point of noting you disagree" (Ask a Manager). A disagreement that ends with fine, but I still think you are wrong has not ended. It has been adjourned, and both of you know it.

Check one thing before you start. If this manager argues the same way with everyone on the team, the pair is part of a wider pattern that belongs to them, and your half is only the part you can control.

What to do this week. For the next two weeks, when a decision goes against you, say your view once, clearly, before the decision. After it, say understood, I will do it that way, and nothing more. Keep a note of which disagreements actually mattered. If the answer is most of them, the issue is bigger than the pair, and the view below applies. If the answer is few, you have just given yourself back hours of your week.

What to do with this result

Both views are here. If you answered the routing question, yours comes first.

If you do not manage people

Your Monday one on one. Change your half first, then name it: I have noticed I keep arguing after we have decided. From now on I will make my case before the decision and go with it after. If I slip, tell me.

The three columns. Leave, if two months of saying it once and letting go changed nothing on their side, and the disagreements that matter are most of them. Stay and act, if the disagreements that matter are few and the rest can go. Stay and wait, if one of you is already moving role.

The free leadership style quiz shows how you would use authority from the other chair.

If you manage people

Your reports could answer these twelve statements about you, and a pair pattern has two ends. If someone on your team keeps arguing after decisions, check how you close a decision: whether you say what was decided, why, and that the discussion is over. A decision that is never closed keeps being reopened. The conflict style assessment shows how you handle disagreement, and the one on one meeting builder gives disagreement a set place before the decision.

If you need support now

This page is not a crisis service and nobody reads your answers. If you are thinking about harming yourself or you are in danger, reach a person today. In the US, call or text 988 to reach the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, or text HOME to 741741 to reach Crisis Text Line.

In the UK and Ireland, call Samaritans on 116 123, or text SHOUT to 85258. Anywhere else, call your local emergency number. If work is affecting your sleep or your health, see a doctor. A coach is not the right first call for that, and neither is a quiz.

If this is a legal matter

Harassment and discrimination at work are legal questions, and a quiz cannot answer them. In the US, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission explains what the law covers and how to file a charge at eeoc.gov. In the UK, ACAS gives free, impartial advice at acas.org.uk. An employment lawyer can tell you what applies to you. Nothing on this page is legal advice.

The other results

  • The PatternThe same friction follows you across jobs. That part is yours.
  • The PlaceLittle points at you. On this evidence, it is not you.
  • The SeasonMixed evidence, a hard stretch. A season, not a verdict.
