In Step
Level 1. Scores 76 to 100. They see you as you see yourself. Now ask a harder room.
The people you asked see you roughly the way you see yourself. Across the four dimensions, your self rating and their rating are within a few points of each other, which is worth pausing on. Once the benchmark publishes you will see how often rounds land here and which way the gap usually runs.
Two cautions before you enjoy it. First, look at who you asked. In Step results from three people you chose because you get on with them are worth less than an Out of Step result from a harder audience.
If all three raters report to you, you have learned how your reports see you and nothing about how your peers or your boss do, and those are usually the bigger gaps. Second, look at the spread notes on your results screen. If your raters agree with you on average and disagree with each other, you are a different leader to different people, and the average is hiding it.
The direction line on your results screen matters even here. If your ratings are slightly above theirs across the board, that is small, consistent and worth knowing: it is the direction leaders tend to drift. If you rate yourself a little below your raters, you are harder on yourself than they are, which is fine until it stops you asking for the next role. If there is no consistent direction, take that as a clean read.
When a client's results come back aligned, the first thing I ask is who they sent it to. The second question is harder: what would the person you least want to hear from have said? Most of what a leader believes about their strengths, the people around them already agree with. That part is rarely news. The useful part is the small remainder, where you think you are very good at something and others think you are not. An aligned result usually means you have not reached that part yet. That is not a pass. It is a first round.
What to do with it: run it again with a harder set of raters, and include at least one peer and, if you can, the person you report to. Then compare the two rounds. The second round is the one that tells you something.
Next step: the questions to ask in a full 360 are in the 360 feedback question bank, and the structure for running one properly is in the 360 feedback template.

The other results
- CloseYou mostly agree, with one gap specific enough to close.
- Out of StepA real gap on more than one dimension. It stings and works.
- Different RoomsYou and your raters are describing two different leaders.
