What is your communication style, and how does your team hear you?

You know what you meant. The question is what your team heard. Most communication style quizzes sort you into a colour or a letter and stop there, which tells you about your preference and nothing about your effect. This quiz is for leaders, and it measures four behaviours you use when something has to land: leading with the point, leading with the reasoning, leading with the person, and leading with the question.

Twelve statements, about four minutes, no email. You get your style and a clarity score from 0 to 100. The clarity score is a range score, not a preference score: it is high when you can do all four and low when you rely on one. The result page reads your strongest mode against your weakest one, which is where your team hears something you did not say. Answer for how you actually speak in a hard conversation, not how you would like to.

Communication Style Quiz for Leaders

What is my communication style and why do people misread me?

What you get

  • Your score out of 100
  • Which of the 4 results you land on
  • Scores across Headline, Structure, Connection and Inquiry
  • Your strongest dimension and your gap, and where to start

Both are optional and anonymous. They only cut the aggregate statistics and are never tied to a name.

12 statements. No email needed, result on screen.

Question 10%

0Score

Clarity score = round((sum of all twelve minus 12) / 48 x 100). It is a range score: high when you can do all four modes, not a measure of one. Your style is the highest of the four dimensions.

The four results

Every completed run lands on one of these pages, with your own scores drawn from the link the tool gives you. Each one is readable without taking the tool.

  • HeadlineYou lead with the point. Clear, fast, hard to argue with.
  • StructureYou lead with the reasoning. The ask arrives late.
  • ConnectionYou lead with the person. Hard messages land soft.
  • InquiryYou lead with the question. Where do you stand?

How this differs

This is not a renamed four colour or four letter instrument such as DISC. It scores four behaviours a leader uses when something has to land, and it scores range, not just preference. It also differs from the live Communication Footprint diagnostic, which measures how much noise a leader produces across channels; this quiz measures how a leader is heard in the room.

What happens to your responses

Your score, your result and your dimension scores are shown on screen without an email address. An anonymous copy of the score and the dimension scores, with no name, email or free text, joins the aggregate statistics for this tool, which are published only when a cut has at least 30 completions. Email is optional. Only if you ask for the result by email is it written to your contact record, and only then. The full rules are on the methodology page.

Common questions

Is this a personality test?

No. It does not sort you into a colour or a letter and it does not claim to measure who you are. It scores four things you do when something has to land: lead with the point, the reasoning, the person, or the question. Those are habits, and habits move. The result tells you which one you rely on and which one your team is missing from you.

What does the clarity score measure?

Range. It is high when you can do all four modes and low when you lean on one. A leader who scores high on Headline and low on the other three can be very clear and still score in the middle, because clarity in one register is not the same as being heard by everyone. The score is the number the statistics page benchmarks.

Can I have more than one communication style?

Your style is the highest of your four dimensions, and the result page reads it against your lowest. If your four scores are close, your profile is flat, which usually means you already move between modes, and the copy says so. If two dimensions tie for first, the one listed first in the order Headline, Structure, Connection, Inquiry is shown, so read both result pages.

How does my team hear me?

The result page pairs your strongest mode with your weakest one, so you can see the effect from the other side of the table. A leader who leads with the point and rarely asks a question is heard differently from one who leads with the point and rarely lays out the case. The one change for the week comes from that pairing.
