By Andreas Pettersson, Founder, Leaders ADAPT
You've told the team the priority three times this year. The quarter still looks like the last one, and you're the one pulling everyone up the hill.
In the Harvard Business Review's study of growth stalls, 87 percent of the large companies tracked stalled at least once, and only 13 percent of the causes were external. The rest were management choices. So before you shop the best business growth consultants, sort your stall with the Growth Stall test; the right firm depends on which of its three states you're in. A business growth consultant is an outside advisor paid to find and remove whatever caps a company's revenue or profit, from pricing and sales process to the leadership team, and to stay until the number moves.
Quick answer: The best business growth consultants for a given company depend on its size. Small business coaching companies (Accountability Now) fit under $10M; owner led firms of $1M to $50M fit boutique CEO advisors (Leaders ADAPT) and Scaling Up coaches (Petra Coach); midmarket companies fit Johnny Grow, Chief Outsiders and Vivaldi; enterprises fit Simon-Kucher, Bain, BCG and McKinsey. None publish prices.
How this list was built: the selection criteria and method
Three rules, stated up front so you can disagree with them.
Every firm is described from its own public pages, read on October 3, 2026. No reviews, no star ratings, no client counts beyond what the firm publishes.
The list runs by company size fit, smallest to largest, not by quality. Fit you can verify before you pay; quality only after.
Leaders ADAPT is on the list because it belongs in one size band, $1M to $50M owner led companies, and I've said where it doesn't belong. One of these ten should be yours. Nine should not.

Accountability Now
Accountability Now describes itself as a "player-coach" business coaching company for "small businesses aiming to leap from under $1M to $10M in annual revenue." Its site lists business coaching, executive coaching and fractional COO and CRO roles, month to month with "no long-term contracts ever."
Leaders ADAPT
Leaders ADAPT is my firm, so read this entry with that in mind. It serves owner led companies of $1M to $50M through 1:1 CEO advisory, a CEO Mastermind capped at 14 members and one on one executive coaching, and sorts a stalled company with the Growth Stall test before any engagement starts. It is not a fit for a 700 person company that needs a compliance program.
Petra Coach
Petra Coach provides executive business coaching on the Scaling Up platform and its four decisions of People, Strategy, Execution and Cash. Its stated process is a free Performance Culture Assessment, a deep dive, quarterly planning and monthly coaching; "$2.4B in Revenue by Active Petra Clients" is the firm's own aggregate.
Johnny Grow
Johnny Grow is one of the few business growth consulting firms that names midmarket B2B as its lane, from construction and manufacturing to professional services and software. Its process is a 30 minute strategy discussion, a "Business Growth Blueprint," then implementation support, with consultants it says average 26 plus years of experience.
Chief Outsiders
Chief Outsiders supplies fractional executives, mainly CMOs and CSOs, to small and mid sized businesses and private equity portfolio companies, using its Growth Gears method of Insight, Strategy and Execution. Its site cites more than 2,000 clients and engagements from a single workshop to years.
Vivaldi
Vivaldi is a brand strategy, growth and innovation consultancy headquartered in New York with ten offices on four continents. Its homepage names Mercedes-Benz, AB InBev, Coca-Cola, LEGO, Comcast and Pfizer as clients, which tells you its size band, and it is one of the growth strategy firms that publishes a list of its own for this query.
Simon-Kucher
Simon-Kucher calls itself "the world's leading commercial growth and pricing specialist," with more than 2,200 employees and offices in 30 plus countries, working across product, price, innovation, marketing and sales. If your growth problem is pricing and you're above roughly $50M, this is the specialist on the list.
Bain & Company
Bain's strategy practice covers corporate and business strategy, "Growth Beyond the Core," innovation and business building, transformation and AI strategy, for leading companies across industries. Its stated principle: "strategy is about making things happen." Enterprise firm, enterprise economics.
Boston Consulting Group
BCG lists Business Strategy and Corporate Strategy under its Corporate Finance and Strategy practice, with offices in more than 100 cities in over 50 countries. Like Bain and McKinsey, it is built for organizations with a board, a CFO function and a program office to receive the work.
McKinsey & Company
McKinsey's Growth, Marketing and Sales practice states its purpose as "Helping clients grow faster than the market," covering pricing, sales management, branding and analytics; published case studies name Allianz, Reckitt and Deutsche Telekom. It is the firm most owner CEOs mean when they say "consultant," and the least likely fit under $50M.
How do growth consultants differ by company size?
The firms above solve different problems and share only a word.
Under $10M the problem is usually the owner: sales run through you, pricing is instinct, there is no second layer of management. You need someone working the problem with you weekly, which is why small business coaching companies sell month to month.
Between $1M and $50M, the owner led band where I work, the stall shows up as a leadership team that doesn't execute the priority you set. In our own data, 57 percent of 84 owner CEOs who came to us raised cash and pricing, 55 percent sales growth and 50 percent strategy. Same owners, three consulting categories. That's why the sort comes first.
Above $50M the work becomes a program: workstreams, a steering committee, an IT and compliance review before anything touches a system. Here's the one I didn't take.
The 700 person company I handed to the big firms
Last year I spent weeks going back and forth with a company of about 700 employees. The CEO wanted me. The CEO was never the problem.
Every step hit the IT and security teams, and the conversation became a compliance negotiation I wasn't built to run alone. In the end I said it out loud: let the big firms go in with their armies of people and get that job done.
That wasn't modesty. Scaling Arcules from three people to more than 150, and running it as one of Canon's youngest CEOs, taught me what a boutique operator can carry and what needs a bench of forty. A consultant who takes every size of company is telling you about their pipeline, not your fit.
The reverse mistake costs more. A mid size company I know paid a top consultancy about $500K for a strategy nobody could execute. The pattern in one line: traditional consulting loses on theory not practice, strategy without execution and measurement, and hard skills only.
What do business growth consultants cost?
None of the ten publishes a rate, so the honest cost answer is a band with a source.
For the coaching and advisory end of the list, the Leaders ADAPT executive coaching cost index (updated September 2026) puts most executive coaching at $200 to $600 an hour with a $500 median, CEO and C-suite retainers at $3,000 to $10,000 and up per month, and peer groups at $500 to $1,500 per member per month.
For consulting firms, the Consulting Success fees study of nearly 1,000 consultants (2026) reports how they charge, not what: about 30 percent project based, 29 percent hourly, 16 percent monthly retainer, 15 percent value based and 10 percent daily. Enterprise firm fees are not published anywhere I could verify, so any figure you see for a Bain or McKinsey engagement is est.
Two rules. Ask for the price model before the price. And ask what the first 90 days produce; a firm that can't name a decision, a number or a hire is selling meetings.
How do you choose? Five criteria that survive a sales call
- Has the lead consultant run a company of your size? From my own fractional work, the number one thing CEOs tell me they're looking for is another CEO who has run and scaled a business coming in to assess the company. That is what they value. The delivery they can get anywhere.
- Can they name your stall before the proposal? If discovery ends without saying whether you're stuck on direction, on one persistent execution problem or on your own limits, the proposal will be generic.
- What's in the first 90 days, in nouns? A decision, a number, a hire, a price change. Not "alignment."
- Who does the work? Some firms sell senior people and staff junior ones. Ask who sits in your Monday meeting.
- How is the result measured, by whom, and when? If you don't measure, you can't manage.
One more filter from the AI side of my work: executives get hit up by consultants who read a report and have never run a company that implemented the thing. Credentials are not credibility. Ask what they built.
What are the alternatives: coach, mastermind or fractional executive?
A growth consultant is one of four ways to buy outside help, and often not the best one for an owner led company.
A business coach or CEO advisor works on you and your leadership team weekly rather than delivering a plan; see what a business growth consultant does. A CEO mastermind puts you in a room with a dozen peers who have already made your next decision; see the CEO mastermind comparison. Fractional executives take ownership of a function, which is what Chief Outsiders sells and what fractional leadership for growth covers across roles. A growth consultant diagnoses and prescribes, then hands you the execution unless you pay for implementation.
If the company has outgrown the founder's operating habits, start with the how to scale a business hub. If the gap is the leadership team, not the strategy, leadership consulting is the adjacent category.
Best business growth consultants FAQ
Who are the best business growth consultants for a small business?
For companies under $10M in revenue, hands on, month to month business coaching companies such as Accountability Now fit best. For owner led companies of $1M to $50M, boutique CEO advisory firms such as Leaders ADAPT and Scaling Up coaches such as Petra Coach match the usual problem, a leadership team that does not execute the owner's priorities rather than a missing strategy.
What is the difference between a growth consultant and a management consultant?
A growth consultant focuses on revenue and profit levers: pricing, sales process, customer acquisition, market expansion and the leadership capacity to deliver them. A management consultant covers a wider scope that can include operations, organization design, technology and cost. Large strategy firms do both; boutique firms usually pick one. The label matters less than whether the firm's typical client is your size.
How much do business growth consultants charge?
Published rates are rare. For coaching and advisory engagements, aggregated 2026 data puts most executive coaching at $200 to $600 an hour and CEO retainers at $3,000 to $10,000 and up per month. Consultant surveys show about 30 percent price by project, 29 percent hourly and 16 percent by monthly retainer. Enterprise strategy firms do not publish fees, so any figure quoted for them is an estimate.
Do the top growth consulting firms work with companies under $50M?
Some do and some do not. McKinsey, Bain, BCG and Simon-Kucher position their services for large organizations, while Vivaldi and Johnny Grow describe midmarket and large brand clients. Accountability Now, Petra Coach, Chief Outsiders and Leaders ADAPT state small or owner led company ranges on their own pages. Check the firm's stated client range before booking a call.
When should a company hire a growth consultant instead of a coach?
Hire a growth consultant when the problem is a decision the company lacks the data or expertise to make, such as pricing architecture or market entry, and the team can execute once it is made. Hire a coach or advisor when the plan exists and the owner or leadership team does not execute it. Many stalled companies have the second problem and buy the first solution.
Fit beats fame
The best business growth consultants for your company are the ones whose typical client looks like you, who can name your stall before the proposal and who will say what you'll have by day 90. The wrong size fit produces a correct document and a quiet office. The right one produces a number that moves.
The line I hear from owners who call me: I know best, but I'm starting to doubt myself because I still don't get the results. If that's you, the firm is secondary. The sort is primary.
Tomorrow morning, before you book a call, write three sentences: the number that has stalled, the one thing your team was told to do about it, and why it didn't happen. That is your Growth Stall test answer, and it tells you which third of this table to read.
Where Leaders ADAPT fits: 1:1 CEO advisory for the $1M to $50M owner
If you're in the owner led band, here's what working with me looks like. The first conversation is a discovery call: we run the Growth Stall test on your company and decide honestly whether you need one of the best business growth consultants above, a coach, a mastermind or none of them. If we continue, the first 90 days are weekly: a full day with your numbers and org chart, leadership assessments for every seat, and a one page plan with at most three priorities, because I've watched what 47 of them did to my own company. Then a weekly hour, direct access when something breaks, and an optional CEO Mastermind seat.
There's one artifact I build in week one that owners tell me changed how they read their own business, and I keep it for the call because it only makes sense with your numbers in front of us. Bring the three sentences you wrote this morning and start with the 1:1 CEO coaching discovery call.
