Level 2. Scores 26 to 50. You use AI. It has not yet changed how you lead.
You have started. You use AI in your own work, at least sometimes, and you have begun to form views about where it helps and where it does not. What has not happened yet is the shift from personal use to leadership use: the point where AI changes how you run the team rather than how you write the email.
The pattern at this level is item five. Most of what Explorers use AI for is work they would otherwise have delegated: the draft, the summary, the first version of the deck. That is useful and it is not leadership. The leadership uses are the ones where AI changes what you think about: a decision you now pressure test differently, a meeting you run differently because the preparation is done, feedback you give more often because writing it takes a minute.
Look at your Governance bar. Explorers typically score lowest here, because the tools arrived faster than the rules, and the rules feel like someone else's job. They are not. If an AI assisted decision in your area went wrong tomorrow, and nobody can say which person was accountable, that is the gap, and it is yours to close in one sentence to your team.
The first thing I changed was where my thinking starts. I keep a voice journal every day, and I built a digital twin of my own voice, so the first draft of a lot of what I write now starts there. It changed how I lead more than how I write. When something lands on my desk, the first question is no longer who should do this. It is whether an AI can do it, and what is left that only I should do.
What I will not hand over is the last look. My rule is to assume the output is wrong and to put a human check before anything reaches a customer, and that human is the person accountable for it. AI is a force multiplier. It is not the final author.
One thing to do this month. Pick one recurring process you own, a weekly meeting, a monthly review, a planning cycle, and change one step of it because of what AI can now do. Not a pilot. A change. Then tell your team what changed and why. That single visible move does more for your Team bar than any policy.
One more check. Write down what share of your team you think is genuinely enthusiastic about using AI in their work, then ask them. If their answer is lower than your number, you were reading your own enthusiasm, which is exactly why asking matters more than assuming.
Next step: if your Practice bar is high and your Team bar is low, your one on ones are where this moves. Score them with the 1:1 meeting builder.
