Spectator

Level 1. Scores 0 to 25. AI has not yet changed how you lead. You are watching.

0Score

This page describes the Spectator result. Take the ai leader readiness index to see your own score and dimension bars here; they are drawn from the link the tool gives you and nothing is stored on this page.

AI has not yet changed how you lead. You may use it, or your team may, but the twelve behaviours this index measures, the judgment calls, the personal practice, the conversations with your team, the accountability, are mostly not happening yet. You are watching.

There are two kinds of Spectator and the score cannot tell them apart, so you have to. The first has decided, on purpose, that this is not yet worth their time, and can say why. That is a position, and in some roles and some markets it is defensible for a while longer. The second has not decided anything.

AI is happening around them, their team is using it in ways they have not asked about, and the reason they have not engaged is that engaging feels like admitting they are behind. That second kind is the majority, and the tell is item eleven: not telling anyone senior how much you use it, because you are not sure how it would land.

Look at your Team bar. It is the one that matters most at this level, because whatever you are doing personally, your team is already using these tools, and a leader who has not asked which of them do, or said in plain words what may and may not go into one, is carrying a risk they have not looked at.

Here is the claim I will defend in any room. A leader's job with AI is not to learn the tools. It is to decide what may never go into one, and who is accountable when it is wrong.

Most leaders I meet have skipped that part. They handed AI to the team, said go and explore, and never had the conversation. The team took the tools. Nobody took the accountability. AI is a culture change, not a technology change, and culture is the one thing a leader cannot hand to someone else. Being the best prompt writer in the company is optional. Drawing the line is the job.

One thing to do this month, and it is not "learn AI". Ask each of your direct reports, in the next one on one, what they used AI for last week and what they would never use it for. Write the answers down. You will learn more about your team's real exposure in five conversations than in any course.

Next step: the existing AI readiness assessment measures a different thing, where you place AI in your own work. Take it if you want the personal read.
