Wrong Seat

Reading. Your lowest reading is the seat. A preference, not a failure.

0Score

This page describes the Wrong Seat result. Take the leader burnout test: burned out or wrong seat to see your own score and dimension bars here; they are drawn from the link the tool gives you and nothing is stored on this page.

Your lowest reading is the seat. Your energy and recovery are not the main problem and the environment is not the main problem. The thing that scores lowest is whether you want this work: managing people, the actual work of it, and the next role up.

This is the reading people are most afraid of and it deserves a calmer read than it usually gets. Not wanting to manage people is not a failure. It is a preference, and the people who know their preference and act on it are better off than the ones who spend a decade proving they can do a job they do not want.

Plenty of leaders who took a manager role after being the best individual contributor, or who moved up because it was the only way to be paid more, land here, and the honest ones say something like "I don't think I'm leadership material" in forums at two in the morning.

Two cautions before you act on it. First, check the me bar. A depleted leader often scores low on Fit because nothing feels wanted when you are empty. If your me bar is also low, recover first, then take the test again. The seat reading may change. Second, check what "the work of managing people" means to you. Some leaders who score low here do not dislike leading. They dislike the version of it they are doing: the reporting, the politics, the meetings. That is an environment problem wearing a fit costume.

I have seen it go both ways. A director I worked with stepped back from running a team to lead the hardest client work in the company, and within a month she sounded like a different person. Another leader, a VP, was sure he should step down. When we looked closer, he did not hate managing people.

He hated the reporting and the politics around it, and nobody above him noticed what he did. The difference showed up in one request: describe a good day in this job. She described a day with no team in it. He described a day with his team in it and his boss out of it. Same reading on paper. Two different answers.

What to do this month. Write down, in one paragraph, what you would do if you were not managing people, and what you would lose. Then have one conversation with someone who has made that move, in either direction. Not to decide. To find out what the decision actually involves.

This is not a clinical result and not a verdict. It is the lowest of three bars.

Next step: if the seat is wrong because the company is scaling past the job you signed up for, the ADAPT framework page describes the Direction stage, which is this question. Read it on the ADAPT framework page.

This test is not a diagnosis and cannot replace one. It is a coaching tool, written for people who lead others, and it does not measure any medical condition.

If the last few weeks have been more than tiredness, if sleep has gone, or if you have stopped caring about things you used to care about, please speak with a doctor or with someone you trust. A coach is not the right first call for that. Your national health service or a helpline in your country comes before any page like this one.

When I think a client needs more than coaching, I say it plainly: see a doctor first, and we will pick this up when you are ready. Coaching starts where there is frustration and a wish to move, and it is not built for someone who is worn down in a way that rest does not fix. Sending you to the right person first is the most useful thing I can do.

The other results

  • SteadyYour energy is holding. Watch the bars, not the score.
  • DepletedYour lowest reading is you. It is the most recoverable one.
  • EnvironmentYour lowest reading is the environment. It is not an excuse.
